How are you getting in? Basically this is asking if you want a clicker / remote, keypad or call box. This can vary a lot, especially when planning for residential, gated communities, offices, manufacturing plants, or industrial plants. Very rarely there are customers that just want the gate to keep their pets in or other animals out. Then, they simply have an automatic opener to get in and to get out.
How are you getting out? This might be a simple exit sensor, a physical keypad with a code, or a proximity reader that makes you scan a badge or fob to exit.

Do you want to open your gate at a certain time and let it close at a certain time?
Do you want the ability to hold your gate open; if you decided not to open and close at certain times or simply outside the times it’s opened?
Do you want remote control capability of your gate (from home, phone, internet ,etc)
Do you want a physical lock on your gate? This lock will be electrical and will be controlled by the gate opener. Releasing the lock before the gate starts moving must happen and gate openers have the capability to control the lock and then open the physical gate.
How much safety beyond that required by law do you want or need? For gate openers safety means keeping the gate from closing on cars or people not the security of your home or property. That is a physical gate problem and should be addressed when you design your gate and the fencing around your property.
